Five Easy Pieces

6 Dec

From “shallow learning” to “deep learning” in Five Easy Pieces*

I asked my Year 8 class to research Respiration using SOLO Taxonomy – they collated facts and information about their chosen subject (red blood cell, oxygen etc) this lended itself to “shallow learning” – unistructural and multistructural. Working collaboratively they then discussed which parts links with which – e.g the red blood cell links with oxygen, carbon dioxide etc – this was the relational stage. The class then co-constructed a video to explain what they had learnt – they had reached extended abstract.

* Five Easy Pieces is a film starring Jack Nicholson…..it is very good.
